Data Storage: On-premises or in the Cloud – Which is Best?
Cloud computing is everywhere today, and businesses of all sizes use it in some form or another. But how do you know if storing information in the cloud is right for your business? Security is usually the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about moving your data to the cloud. Some experts agree that it is more secure, while others are skeptical about it. Other items that come to mind are cost, maintenance, and data recovery.
With all of the discussion about cloud data storage and migration that is going on, you can be easily swayed in one direction or another, but how can you be sure what is best for you and your company? Before switching to cloud-based storage for your business’s sensitive data, such as financial information, ask yourself these questions:
- Would storing your company information on-premises really be more secure compared to storing it in the cloud? Companies such as Amazon and Microsoft (Azure) have invested a lot of time and money into this and take security seriously – reputation goes a long way, but so does their proven track records
- How much of a cost advantage would moving to the cloud provide your organization? Will it significantly reduce your regular and ongoing IT maintenance costs?
- Are you able to setup a security hierarchy? Is there some information that employees of only certain seniority levels should be allowed/able to access? Can you control what the users can or can not see? If so, how easy (or difficult) is this to setup?
After answering all of these questions, the decision comes down to doing your research, both internally and externally. Cloud technology has the potential to take your company’s efficiency to new levels, but it might not make sense for your specific company’s current and future needs.
